NEET (UG)

NEET(UG) or the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) is an entrance examination for students who wish to study undergraduate medical courses (MBBS) and dental courses (BDS) in government or private medical and dental colleges in India. It was formerly known as the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT). NEET-UG replaced the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) and all individual MBBS exams conducted by states or colleges themselves in 2013. However, many colleges and institutes still conduct their private examinations for admission to their MBBS and BDS courses. In September 2019, NEET-UG became common all India entrance test for admissions to medical colleges in India including the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) which until then conducted separate entrances.

All candidates who belong to the following categories are eligible for this examination.

  • All candidates between the age of 17 and 25 years, belonging to General category are eligible.
  • Upper age limit for candidates belonging to Reserved category and PwD is 30 years.
  • Candidates must have completed their 12th standard or any equivalent exam with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Bio-Technology with English from CBSE or any other state board.
  • Appearing candidates who are already in 12th standard can also apply for NEET, but they will have to show their passing certificates with the required percentage to take admission in medical and dental courses.
  • Candidates belonging to General category should have scored 50% or above in 12th standard or equivalent exam while reserved category candidates should have scored 40% or above.

Seats are reserved on the basis of category and state of the candidates. The reservation is as follows.

  • About 85% of the medical and dental seats are reserved for the students falling under NEET state quota.
  • About 15% of seats are reserved for All India Quota candidates in various medical and dental colleges of India.
  • 15% seats are reserved for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes.
  • 27% seats are reserved for the OBC – NCL candidates.
  • 10% seats are reserved for General – EWS candidates.
  • 7.5% seats are reserved for candidates belonging to Scheduled Tribes.
  • 3% seats are reserved for the Physically Handicapped Candidates.

The exam duration is 3 hours. There are total 180 questions asked in the exam, with 45 questions each from Physics and Chemistry and 90 questions from Biology. The syllabus consists of the core concepts of Physics, Chemistry and Biology taught in classes 11 and 12 as prescribed by the NCERT. The questions are Multiple- choice with only ONE correct option out of the four. Each correct response fetches 4 marks and each incorrect response gets -1 negative marking. The exam is of 720 marks.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has been made the nodal agency for the conduction of all India competitive exams and conducts NEET-UG from 2019. The Central Board of Secondary Education conducted NEET between 2013 and 2018 before the setting of NTA

As per the orders of Honorable Supreme Court, there will be a single medical entrance exam all over India for admission into medical and dental colleges. The colleges will not be able to conduct their own medical entrance exam and thus all will accept students based on NEET Score. The total number of seats offered under NEET are 66,000 which is distributed accordingly.

  • All private colleges offer more than 25,000 seats
  • All government colleges offer more than 27,000 seats
  • There are around 3500 NEET Counselling seats
  • There are around 35,000 NEET Basis seats
  • NEET is also for admission into 15% seats in government medical and dental colleges and in all private medical and dental colleges all over India.
